Afterwind is a free browser-based multiplayer strategy game. In the best traditions of Risk and Civilization, you fight against other players for world domination on a real world map, with 200 countries and 500 cities. The game features unique free unit movement, battles on a massive scale with up to 20 players involved, dozens of units, in-game alliances and coalitions (clans) - and much more. At the moment, the game has over 10000 registered players and is growing rapidly.
Press release:
Web games are very popular nowdays - they require no installation and they are usually free. Unfortunately, most of them are rather shallow and are rarely worth coming back to. When we started developing Afterwind over 2 years ago, we decided that we want to make one of the best turn-based strategy games around, and being a 'web game' is not going to hinder that. We've always liked the simplicity of Risk, so we took it as the base and combined it with our favorite elements from strategy games (like Civilization), various random sources (like MMOs) and quite a few ideas of our own. We wanted the setting of the game to be the modern world (or near future), with the geographically realistic world map, with actual countries and hundreds of cities, and with real numbers for population and GDP. We also wanted to get rid of the movement grid or any kind of predetermined paths - so unit movement in the game is completely free. Another idea we have to increase the game realism is to involve civilians - since obviously they cannot remain unaffected with so much warfare going on around them. There will be population losses and migration, which will affect economy and unit production. At the same time we try to keep the game simple, with most of the inner complexity in the background, so new players shouldn't be intimidated. The interface and controls are simple and intuitive, and there's no annoying micromanagement. Most of the game revolves around expanding your territory, using 10 different units at player's disposal. Each game can have up to 20 players and set either in a smaller region (for example, Europe or Middle East) or spread around the entire map. To reward the players, we have Medals (achievements) and Strategy Points, which can be used to unlock various upgrades, and also translate into ranks. Of course, the best reward is still winning a fair game against worthy opponents. Early on, we made a decision to go with MS Silverlight. While many (especially Linux users) are very critical towards it, Silverlight is a great platform for developing a very complex application like Afterwind. Developing the same thing in Flash or HTML5 would've been close to impossible. Hopefully, Silverlight will have better support for Linux users one day - the ported version (Moonlight) is currently stuck two releases behind. Since the official launch the game has been expanding rapidly and now has almost 20000 registered players. It is now also available as a Facebook app (http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=132736180079596). We're not planning to slow down - we have plenty of interesting ideas in store and continue working on improving Afterwind every day.
